So how does $6 in toll road charges become $30.75? With PlatePass®! On our last trip to Disney I flew down with youngest son and we rented a car from Hertz. Before we left, I had called Hertz to see how paying for the tolls worked with the rental car since it was our first time renting a car. We have a SunPass (Florida’s toll road easy pay system) device that we could have brought with us if need be. Hertz told me that there was a system in the car that would automatically pay for the tolls. They also said that we did not need to bring our SunPass nor did we have to pay tolls when we went through the toll booths. I asked them a lot of questions but they never mentioned the fee per day for PlatePass® or that there was any fee at all. During the time we had the rental car, we went through three toll booths the first night and then two the day we returned the car. For a grand total of $6.00 in tolls.
After we got home, about a week later my husband noticed a separate bill from Hertz for an extra $30.75. Once I made some calls I found out that PlatePass® was the reason why. We learned that PlatePass® fees will apply if the service is used at any time during the rental period for the whole rental period. All vehicles with participating rental car agencies are pre-enrolled and no advance commitment or contract is required to use PlatePass®. So lesson learned, ask even more questions about fees and next time just pay the tolls at the toll booths.
What is PlatePass?
PlatePass® is an electronic toll payment system that enables renters to use high-speed electronic toll collection lanes and bypass backups at cash lanes. The PlatePass® service also means that rental car customers will avoid costly toll violation fines otherwise incurred if high-speed toll lanes are used.
Why Did I Receive A PlatePass Charge?
Your rental vehicle is automatically PlatePass® enabled. No contracts or registrations are required. You were charged for tolls that were incurred by your rental vehicle during your rental period based on your agreement. Had your vehicle not been PlatePass® – enabled, you would have received a toll violation or fine from the toll road authority.

If you use PlatePass®, you will be charged a $4.95 service fee for each day of the rental including any days on which PlatePass® is not used, up to a maximum of $24.75 per rental, plus incurred tolls at the Toll Authority’s cash toll rate or highest undiscounted toll rate.
